1997 chevrolet camaro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A remarkable performance bargain. introductiondue to their relatively low sales volumes, sport coupe redesign intervals generally extend well beyond the shelf life of a mainstream sedan. Which means they have to look good and perform well for a long time. And that prescription accurately describes the chevrolet camaro and its corporate cousin, the pontiac firebird. More practical concerns, such as room for rear-seat passengers, cargo capacity or fuel economy, are not really addressed with these cars. Moving up the price ladder from there is the rs trim level and above that the high-performance z28. Trim levels for the pontiac variant are the standard firebird, the formula and the hot rod trans am, all starting substantially higher than their chevy counterparts.  the base engine for both cars is gm's excellent series ii 3800 v6. That's equivalent to many v8s, especially those of the not-too-distant past, without the cost, fuel economy penalty or extra insurance premium often associated with a v8. With 285 horsepower and a standard six-speed manual transmission, it makes the camaro or firebird a genuine high-performance car that's capable of 150 mph-plus.  if that's not enough, order the camaro ss with forced air induction or firebird ws6 with ram air and the horsepower goes to 305, accompanied by further suspension upgrades. Base price was $16,215, plus destination of $525. In addition, it had the $1231 preferred equipment group 2, (option code 1sc), which includes cruise control, remote hatch release, fog lamps, power doors, windows and mirrors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry and theft deterrent. The option code y87 performance package was another $400, 16-inch alloy wheels added $275, the p235/55r16 tires were $132, the am/fm cassette uplevel sound system was $215, a rear window defogger added $170, power driver's seat was $270 and carpeted rear mats were $15. The front seat passenger has about the same seating position, except the engineers placed the engine's catalytic converter so that it creates a hump in the passenger's footwell, which could be an annoyance to some. And when the passenger seat is empty, the seatback flops forward under hard braking, a perennial annoyance in these cars.  the tiny rear seats are shaped with deep buckets in the cushions, and they're suitable only for small packages or really small people who don't complain. Cargo space is also limited. Open the rear hatch and there's a modest crosswise bin behind the rear axle, and a higher shelf that's behind the rear seats. We're talking groceries for two. The low driving position and low center of gravity contribute to a hunkered-down, responsive feel. This enhances handling, by moving weight from the front to the rear. The front suspension is upper and lower control arms, not struts. And the rear axle is suspended on coil springs with a system of links that keep it properly located.  with the optional performance package, the camaro (or firebird) becomes a remarkably good handling car-- better, in fact, than many that wear the 'sports car' label and cost a good deal more. Driven conservatively the ride is smooth enough for reasonable sports car expectations and well controlled. It's obviously not as fast as the v8-powered z28, but it's fast nonetheless, drives great, and hits several targets on the affordability scale. summaryobviously, these kinds of cars aren't for everyone. Interior room is modest at best and the responsive performance entails some compromises. And lookin' good all the way. assembled inste. 2012 land rover range rover review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Luxurious and capable, the ultimate range rover. introductionthe range rover represents the top of the line for land rover. It's classy and luxurious, it's smooth, it's incredibly powerful particularly in supercharged form, and it is amazingly capable off road.  the 2012 range rover lineup includes a new top-line model called the autobiography ultimate edition. Two apple ipads are linked to the rear-seat entertainment system. Oxford leather covers the door casings, dashboard, and steering wheel, and the wood inlays in the dash and doors is genuine kalahari. Even the luggage floor is special, paneled like speedboat's deck in teak, with metal and leather detailing. Each autobiography ultimate edition will be built to order, and only 500 will be sold globally.  2012 range rovers come with hd radio and an ipod lead, and a new towing package is available.  the range rover's off-road capability is downright astounding, thanks to its terrain response electronic all-wheel drive and suspension system. The system includes hill start assist and gradient acceleration control. Range rovers can scramble up rocky mountainsides, cross rivers and traverse mud bogs. The leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands. Land rover says it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 7. 2 seconds. That is plenty fast for anyone in the real world, and plenty impressive for a 5700-pound vehicle. We found the performance of the supercharged range rover scintillating. It's an off-road rocket ship, with 460 pound-feet of torque available for passing or towing.  all range rover models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission that's velvety smooth yet very responsive.  the supercharged uses powerful six-piston brembo brakes, which will slow the truck safely whether braking repeatedly down a curvy mountain road or coming to a straight, quick stop from high speed. Naturally, they're supported by a sophisticated anti-lock brake system that's behind hill descent control and gradient acceleration control. Two apple ipads are linked to the rear-seat entertainment system. Oxford leather covers the door casings, dashboard, and steering wheel, and the wood inlays in the dash and doors are genuine kalahari. Even the luggage floor is special, paneled in yacht-like teak with metal and leather detailing.  safety features that come standard include seven airbags, stability control with traction control and yaw control, anti-lock brakes, hill descent control, acceleration gradient control, tire pressure monitor, collapsible steering column, and rearview camera. walkaroundafter a moderate facelift for 2010 and new grille textures for 2011, appearance changes for 2012 are minor. Door handles and side grilles are now body-color, while all lamp clusters acquire gloss black backplates for sharper contrast.  the range rover design remains distinctive among suvs, boxy and sleek at the same time, very classy.  it has the shortest possible front and rear overhangs to maintain its awesome off-road clearances. Modest fender flares are integrated into the steel fenders rather than tacked on.  autobiography ultimate edition is distinguished by a unique, deeper front fascia that more sharply defines the lower air opening, wrapping body color around it rather than just over its top, as on the standard models. The foglight nacelles are more prominent and bright-finished as well.  the trademark fender vents are accented with brightwork. Politely short sill extensions visually connect the front and rear wheels, suggesting a running board more than anything racy. Like the deeper front fascia, they are not unattractive so much as out of place on an ultimate off-roader.  half a dozen different wheel styles are available, but the most striking features nine pairs of alternating thick and thin spokes (for 18 spokes in all), set tangentially to the hub. They look like they're spinning even when they're standing still. We prefer the more traditional styles.  the teak-plank cargo floor looks quite convincingly like the deck of an antique yacht or speedboat. There's european leather on the headliner, pillars, and door casings. High quality satin black and natural wood trim adds to the sumptuous feel of the interior. The black lacquer looks impressive when clean, but it quickly shows dirt and we prefer the traditional woods.  a 12-inch thin film transistor screen replaces the usual instrument cluster. This screen displays the tach, speedo and other instruments virtually. The driver is able to move the gauges around on the screen for more convenient off-road operation. It's bright, clear, interesting and versatile.  the front leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands.  the window glass in the rear doors is laminated to enhance the silent running in the back seat. 2011 land rover range rover review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The quintessential luxury all-terrain vehicle. introductionthe range rover was substantially re-engineered for the 2010 model year, with a new engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, a more luxurious interior, and redesigned instrumentation.  for 2011, range rover has been upgraded with hill start assist and gradient acceleration control, two new features added to enhance the sophisticated electronic terrain response system. Also, the 2011 range rover gets a new grille design and the addition of functional side vents. Power reclining rear seats and a 1200-watt harman/kardon sound system are new options available on 2011 range rover models.  also new for 2011 is a supercharged autobiography black 40th anniversary limited edition range rover.  range rover represents the top of the line for land rover, the old-line british manufacturer acquired in 2009 by the indian industrial giant tata. The range rover is larger and more luxurious than the range rover sport and land rover lr4.  the range rover's off-road capability is downright astounding, thanks to its exotic electronic all-wheel-drive and sophisticated suspension system, together called terrain response. Though seldom called upon to do so, range rovers can scramble up rocky mountainsides, cross rivers and traverse mud bogs. Land rover admits that they over-engineer their suvs, because they can. It instills owners' confidence in their vehicles and in land rover's ability to build the most capable suvs in the land. The leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands.  the compact 5. 0-liter v8 engine that made its debut in the 2010 range rover has been a hit. Designed by jaguar, this engine replaces the ford v8 that ranger rover had been using. It makes 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty for anyone in the real world, and delivers acceleration of 0-60 in 7. 2 seconds, impressive for a 5700-pound vehicle. We found the performance of the supercharged range rover scintillating. It's an off-road rocket ship, with 460 foot-pounds of torque available for passing or towing.  the supercharged uses powerful six-piston brembo brakes, which will slow the truck safely whether braking repeatedly down a curvy mountain road or coming to a straight, quick stop from high speed. Naturally, they're supported by a sophisticated anti-lock brake system that's behind hill descent control and the new gradient acceleration control. So we didn't expect more changes in 2011, but the mesh in the grille and vents has been changed for 2011 to something more diamond-shaped and starry, that range rover calls a jupiter pattern.  the range rover body is iconic, and needs no description. Its shape is distinctive in the suv world, boxy and sleek at the same time. There's european leather on the headliner, pillars, and door casings. High quality satin black and natural wood trim adds to the sumptuous feel of the interior. The grand black lacquer looks impressive when clean, but it quickly shows dirt and we prefer the traditional woods.  a 12-inch thin film transistor screen replaces the usual instrument cluster. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands.  the window glass in the rear doors is laminated to enhance the silent running in the back seat. Power reclining of the rear seat, in addition to heating and cooling, is available.  the 720-watt, 14-speaker harman/kardon system that comes standard produces chamber-like sound. 2011 brings an optional 1200-watt 19-speaker system. The available rear seat entertainment system includes a 6 dvd changer, separate screens in the front seatbacks, and headphones.  the terrain response system, controlled by a click-wheel on the console, allows the driver to select among six chassis setups, depending on the terrain being traversed. Height control allows the driver to lower the body of the range rover for easy entry of passengers or raise it for off-road clearance. A third control allows for locking the center and rear differentials for demanding off-road conditions or icy on-road driving. There is a separate switch for hill descent control, the system that restricts downhill speed to 2 mph on any grade without touching the brakes. In any off-road mode, a set of icons is displayed on the tft screen showing the front tire steering angle and the locked/unlocked differential positions, so the driver always knows what's what when driving off-road.  using the height control to lower the range rover is a great aid when loading dogs and cargo. driving impressionall 2010 range rover models use the new and compact 5. 0-liter v8 that powers jaguar sedans, with the latest technology including double overhead cams, 32 valves, variable valve timing, and direct fuel injection.  the range rover hse uses a normally aspirated 375 horsepower version with 375 foot-pounds of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7. 2 seconds, a pace that's more than quick enough for safe passing. The engine sounds wonderful and feels blissfully smooth at full throttle, and is nearly soundless at cruising speeds.  the range rover supercharged takes that engine and adds the latest generation of eaton supercharger, boosting the power to 510 horsepower and 461 foot-pounds of torque. That's 28 percent more power and 12 percent more torque than the previous 4. 2-liter supercharged engine, with 12 percent better fuel economy and cleaner emissions. The acceleration leaps from 0 to 60 in 5. 8 seconds, which is hot rod territory, for this suv weighing nearly three tons.  all models use a zf 6-speed automatic transmission, which features normal, sport and manual modes. We found it effortless and unrestrained, and it. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Climate Control✔ Cruise Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Leather Seats

2014 jaguar f-type review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New model worthy successor to e-type. introductionthe jaguar f-type is a sensational new car, the first true sports car jaguar has built in 40 years. We think they nailed it. It's difficult to build something in 2013 that's true to a heritage from so far back without making a car that's crude and retro. Jaguar has done as good a job as possible, although the interior could be less 2013, less swoopy, and still be comfortable and functional.  the f-type is only available for now as a convertible, although a coupe is inevitable and it will be drop-dead gorgeous. The aluminum shapes are created masterfully. A black egg crate grille complements the design while clearly saying it's a jaguar, including the shark-like gills on each side. From the top corners of the headlamps, shaped like smooth bending trapezoids, a sharp character line travels over the front fender, past the door and onto the rear deck. Door handles are flush with the body.  the interior has two personalities, from the passenger seat and driver seat. On the right side, it feels remote and not much like a sports car. A big dashboard feels so far away. Everything is leather-clad. The passenger is further separated from the driving experience by a wide vertical grab handle to the right of the gear lever.  but for the driver, this cabin that jaguar calls asymmetric comes to life, with controls and instruments canted toward him or her. The panel is clean and sporty. The speedo and tach are large and clear, but the numbers seem processed compared to simple white-on-black gauges like we wish the f-type had for the sake of its heritage.  the bucket seats are excellent, no complaints there. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is nice and fat (flat-bottomed is optional), and the paddles are well designed.  the aluminum architecture and chassis structure is the most advanced and best ever. Riveted and bonded, it's the lightest and most rigid ever designed, at no small expense. The f-type weighs in at a slim 3521 pounds.  there are three models, with the supercharged v6 s making 380 horsepower and supercharged v8 s making 495. We got both f-type s cars on the track, where the v6 worked better because it's better balanced. The rigid aluminum double-wishbone suspension front and rear does an amazing job of keeping the car precise. Jaguar f-type s uses the same engine making 380 horsepower. The jaguar f-type v8 s uses a 5. 0-liter supercharged v8 making 495 horsepower. They all use an 8-speed automatic transmission with console or paddle shifting.  the f-type uses 18-inch wheels, the v6 s uses 19-inch wheels, and the v8 s uses 20-inch wheels. Many of the other differences in the s models are aerodynamic, and some are in equipment. With a shorter wheelbase and wider track than the xk, it brings a new look. There was a great deal of special aluminum work done to create the shape and crease in the hood, many expensive tries to get it right. It'd be like comparing joe namath to colin kaepernick. The v8 gets vanes under nose and flat side sill extensions, to manage airflow. There are a number of faux intakes and vents in the front fascia, hood and fenders. If only they were real.  the big black egg crate grille is all jaguar, with shark-like gills on each side. The longitudinal headlamps are smooth bending trapezoids, with cool led outlines on two sides; from their top corners begins a sharp crease that runs over the front fender, past the door and onto the uplifting rear deck. There are split five-spoke alloys that don't seem special enough; painted gray five-spokes split at the rim like crab claws; bladed 10-spokes that are a lot more like it; and a third style with carbon-fiber trim that we're not sold on.  the hood has a sharp power bulge straight up the center. Any jaguar, when viewed head-on, inspires oohs and aahs. Behind the occupants' heads are twin rollbar hoops with fairings that give them depth so they don't look like steel bars. Behind the rollbars is an area that stores the top, then the sensuous rear deck over a good-sized trunk. One option is a valance in gloss black with body-color trimmed over the stainless pipes in the v6. The standard valance is flat black.  the long led tail lamps are thin elegant trapezoids that wrap forward all the way to the back of the rear wheels. There's a graceful ridge on top of the rear fenders that flows down to the center of the tail lamps. We like the single twin exhaust pipes that come out the center of the valance v6, more than the double outboard twin pipes in the v8. The twin-tip center exhaust is a nod to the e-type of 1961, when it was a sensationally sexy idea.  the rear spoiler is invisibly flat, until the car reaches 60 mph. We don't know what it looks like when it's up, we weren't looking. When we were doing 60 and more, we were looking through the windshield with a big grin.  it was a hot day at the launch in the northwest, 270 miles driven on remote washington two-lanes behind mount rainier, some track laps, and another hundred miles on puget sound. We forgot to put the top up. It goes up and down in 12 seconds. We've seen pictures. A great big dashboard, so far away, so remote, and nothing for the passenger to play with or look at. Everything leather-clad, with one tint being a rich dark brown that's stunning. The passenger is further separated from the driving experience by a wide vertical grab handle to the right of the gear lever.  this passenger remoteness is nothing personal, it's an unintended consequence. Jaguar means to lock the driver into his or her experience, not the passenger out of it. Jaguar said the aim was to create an enveloping cockpit for the driver with all the controls placed naturally to hand and logically grouped, allowing maximum attention on the driving experience. Even some finishes and materials are different on the driver's side. And compared to the e-type, the cockpit doesn't feel like a sports car. We can't think of a high-performance luxury sports car that does. Luxury sports car is an oxymoron. The speedo and tach are large and clear, but they don't particularly suggest performance, for sure not old-school. The numbers seem processed compared to e-type gauges. The fit and feel of the bucket seats is just what it should be, with all its adjustment. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is nice and fat (flat-bottomed is optional), but the thumb bumps at 10 and 2 on the wheel get in the way of paddle shifting. Bucket Seats✔ Bluetooth
